We started our first backpacking trip around the world with a transatlantic cruise aboard the Norwegian Epic. It was an 11 night sailing from Miami, Florida, to Barcelona, Spain, with a stop in Funchal, Madeira.
While in Madeira, we rented a car, drove around, and went hiking at Ponta de São Lourenço, the easternmost tip of the island.

Fun Facts/Pro Tips:
1) Transatlantic cruises are also known as repositioning cruises where the cruise lines move their ships to serve different regions in different seasons. These sailing can be found for very cheap because you just spend a lot of days at sea, and it’s one way. For us, this was a great way to get from Florida to Europe. In this case, our cabin was $369/each and our total was less than $560/each with gratuities included. This gave us 11 nights at sea, a stop in Madeira, and transport/food/accommodation on our way to Europe.
2) The average age on this sailing was 69. The handful of younger people on the ship found each other easily.
3) When the Norwegian Epic was built, it was the third largest cruise ship in the world.
